A doula is born
I worked in admin for years, however, after baby no.5 was born, I answered an ad in the local children's centre for breastfeeding peer supporters thinking it would be a voluntary position. When it turned out to be a real paid job I was over the moon as it suited the hours I had available and I was already a passionate advocate for breastfeeding support. I loved my job and took real joy in helping new mums to breastfeed successfully.
Just a year into my newfound vocation, local breastfeeding services were sadly cut but I wanted to continue in the same field, having found my niche. I had already decided that I didn't want to be a midwife so I made enquiries with friends who had employed a doula for their births, enrolled on a course and quickly decided that it would be perfect for me.
My name is Sophia. 'Sophoula' is a nickname from Cyprus where much of my family is from. I am a single mum to 5 children although some of them are quite big now! In addition to my work as a doula, I also work part-time very early in the morning, while studying psychology and reflexology.
